NYASHA Mushekwi of Sundowns continued his good run in the Nedbank Cup yesterday, scoring two goals in their 2-0 win over Bidvest Wits to qualify for the quarterfinals.

The Zimbabwean has now struck eight times in Ke Yona, following his six goals against SAB Regional League side Powerlines FC in the last 32 round early this month.

Mushekwi's goals yesterday were gifts - a result of sloppy defending from the Clever Boys' youngsters, first failing dismally at playing the offside trap and then substitute David de Oliveira giving away possession in his own box for the forward to score his second goal.

In the fourth minute, Bhongolwethu "Powerball" Jayiya sent a low cross into the Sundowns box to find teammate Asive Langwe. But the young winger was not composed enough to find the net, shooting wide with goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands at his mercy.

Wits continued to threaten Sundowns with their attacks, even though most of them did not pay off in the first half.

When Sundowns got their chances, they took them despite goalie Emile Baron hardly being called in to action for most of the game.

While the Clever Boys had no choice but to field inexperienced players because of injuries to key players, Sundowns also rested a few of their important men.

Coach Johan Neeskens left out Teko Modise, Clayton Daniels and Surprise Moriri for this cup clash in fear of suspensions as the trio are on two yellow cards.

In Bloemfontein, Thabo Johnson reports that Santos laboured to a 1-0 win over Safa Vodacom League side Roses United at Botshabelo Stadium.

The Cape Town side's goal came in the seventh minute via Pere Ariweriyai, who beat goalkeeper Lesiba Motloka at his near post after a brilliant cross from Vuyisele Wana. It was just reward for sustained pressure from the visitors.

Ill-discipline from Siyabulela Songwiqi saw Santos being reduced to 10 men midway in the first stanza and to nine men in the second half when Salmaan King got a second booking after only ten minutes on the pitch.

The wasteful Roses have only themselves to blame for failing to capitalise on their numerical advantage.
