The Kenneth Kaunda district and City of Matlosana municipalities have introduced a new half marathon in North West province to help develop road running.

The TYY Half Marathon will be run in Matlosana on April 1 with more than 2000 people expected to take part.

Sowetan has learnt that Old Mutual want to come on board as one of the sponsors. The race is expected to attract some of the best runners in South Africa.

"We expect some of the best runners in the country to compete. It will be an ideal training race for runners who have qualified for the 2012 London Olympics," said the organisers.

"We want to use the event to develop athletics in this area. The event will also help in promoting the area. The success of the Soweto Marathon has inspired us.

"We are starting with the half marathon but will be turning it into a marathon that will also attract some of the best runners in Ethiopia, Kenya and Eritrea."

South African ace runner Stephen Mokoka, who has qualified for marathon at the London Olympics, is one of the big names expected to take part.

The winner will take home R30000, the runner-up R20000 and the third-placed runner R15000.

There will also be a 10km road race and 5km fun run.
