Kaizer Jnr warns minnows

THE days of South African soccer giants Kaizer Chiefs being reduced to a laughing stock by amateur clubs in the Nedbank Cup are over.

The commitment was made by Chiefs striker Kaizer Motaung Junior, who said Amakhosi must start winning consistently to ensure they play in front of a capacity crowd.

Chiefs are determined to end their jinx against amateur clubs by eliminating Cape Town All Stars in the opening round of the tournament at Soccer City on Saturday (8.15pm).

In the past three seasons, Chiefs have been eliminated by non-Premiership clubs, which is also a cause for concern for management.

Amakhosi are still to win this prestigious tournament, which is the FA Cup of South African soccer, since its inception in 2008.

"We have to up our game. It will be a tough one against All Stars. They are unknown to us. We are quite aware that they are going to come at us with guns blazing," Motaung said. "The so-called smaller teams have given us problems in the past - it is now time to address that. We are playing at home and we should win the game.

"It is a motivation for amateur clubs to play against us, we were happy to have a sold-out affair (against Bidvest Wits) last weekend.

"We are always happy to have many fans coming to watch our games, they are our 12th player. If we entertain them and win matches, they will come to watch us play," said Motaung, adding that reports that Steve Komphela was coming to coach Chiefs next season were not the concern of players.

"We have a coach and are working with him to ensure Chiefs do well. We are not bothered even if they were to bring Bill Clinton."

When the same question was put to coach Vladimir Vermezovic, he responded by simply saying "no comment".

Vermezovic also promised Chiefs supporters a win.

"Cup competitions are strange, but we are ready for them. The last three seasons we have not been doing well in this competition, losing to clubs in the lower division. We are going to arrest the situation, starting on Saturday," he said.
