Borman to join United

DANLEIGH Borman, scion of the famous Borman soccer family in Cape Town, has given up Boston for Pretoria.

The versatile 27-year-old, who quit Santos in 2004 to play college football in the US, has rejected the chance to play for the New England Revolution in America's Major League Soccer to join SuperSport United in the PSL.

The former Amajita star (he played for the SA Under-20 team as a 17-year-old), who is equally at home as a left-back and left-winger, has played for Toronto FC since last year. He turned down a reportedly substantial offer from the Revs to stay in the US. His contract with the MLS expired recently, allowing Borman to return to South Africa.

There is no free agency in the MLS, but New England had a first option on the South African. However, Borman decided that he would test his worth on the worldwide market - and United quickly scooped him up after a recent trial. "I'm very happy to join SuperSport," Borman said. "From what I have heard, they are a go-ahead club and I will be eager to make my mark in the PSL."

Borman was a product of the Santos youth system in Cape Town and is the son of Daniel "Dot" Berman, who was one of the stars of the great Cape Town Spurs team that won every title available during the 1970s in the old Federation League. Borman will join United along with another Capetonian, Mark McCarthy, younger brother of Jerome and Benni.
