Mokoka loses duel to Setone

DETERMINED Central Gauteng Athletic runner Tshamano Setone claimed this year's South Africa Cross-Country 12km senior men's title in a photo finish when he beat defending champion Steven Mokoka at the University of Free State in Bloemfontein at the weekend.

The contest was just between the pair, who were running should-to-shoulder until the final lap of the competition.

They separated themselves with ease from the rest of the crowd and proved they have championship credentials. They had everyone cheering when sprinting full force from 100m to the finishing point.

Setone's ability saw him beat Athletic Gauteng North's Mokoka by a split second to claim his first South Africa Cross-Country title.

"Mokoka certainly proved he was the champ throughout the event. He got me to pull out all the stops in my quest to challenge him for the championship. He is a good competitor who has amazing endurance and pace," said a delighted Setone.

Xolisa Tyali of Central Gauteng Athletic was unable to pull off an upset and came third in a repeat of last year's performance.

In devastating form, CGA runner Lebogang Phalula clinched this year's senior women's 8km title, dethroning Miriam Thole. Lebo Phalula, also from CGA, came third after she fell by the wayside towards the final lap of the tough contest. The Phalula twins dominated the women's event from start to finish.
