Dikwena see stars in secondhalf

PLATINUM Stars surrendered a two-goal halftime lead to draw 2-2 with Black Leopards in their Premiership match at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday.

Dikwena, as Stars are popularly known, were cruising as they went to halftime leading 2-0 through goals by Solomon Mathe and Robert Ng'ambi, but Leopards hit back in the second stanza, thanks to strikes by Rodney Ramogalela and Kingston Nkhatha.

Stars handed a debut to striker Nathan Paulse, defender Marco da Silva and young goalkeeper Kagisho Mlambo in changed side from the one that lost 2-1 to Lamontville Golden Arrows in midweek.

Lebo Ramolesa had two early shots on goal both saved by goalkeeper Posnet Omony, but the home side were ahead midway through the first half.

Mathe received the ball at the back post and fired home for his second of the season and also his second in consecutive home matches.

Leopards were forced into a substitution 10 minutes before halftime when Diala Manaka was replaced by Raymond Monama after picking up an injury and the home side were then dealt a blow five minutes later when Mathe was forced off too, with Sibusiso Msomi replacing him.

The pattern of the game continued though with Stars on the attack and they were rewarded with a second goal seconds before the break as Ng'ambi netted after being played in by Lindokuhle Mbatha.

The goals lifted Leopard's confidence and they went close a few times. But the final chance went to Stars when their substitute, Henrico Botes, rose highest to meet Ng'ambi's cross but his header hit the crossbar.

Stars' next match is away to three-time league champions SuperSport United on September 25.
