Wits snatch OJ Mabizela

IN A dramatic twist of events in local soccer circles, Wits have thrown former Bafana Bafana captain Mbulelo "OJ" Mabizela a lifeline after signing him on a two-season deal.

Mabizela's move to Milpark came despite Ajax Cape Town's announcement that they had agreed terms with Mabizela and that they would be signing him today.

Wits co-director George Mogotsi confirmed yesterday that the club has signed the gifted but sometimes burdensome defender on a two-season contract that has an option for renewal.

"We are delighted to have signed a highly experienced player of OJ's calibre," said Mogotsi, who described the acquisition of Mabizela as a "major coup for us".

"Roger (de Sa, Wits coach) phoned OJ this morning to check if he will be available to play for us and OJ wasted no time in agreeing.

"We sat him down for almost five hours to explain our plans and the importance of having a leader of his calibre to guide the youngsters.

"We were a bit thin at the back following the departure of Tefu Mashamaite in May to Kaizer Chiefs and hence we opted for OJ to help us stabilise that department," he said.

Mogotsi added: "OJ has gone through all sorts of bad things in life but he is now opening a new chapter in his life.

"When we signed goalkeeper Wayne Roberts many people said we were making a big mistake but he did very well for us and also returned to Bafana Bafana.

"We have no doubt OJ will do well for us too. He has been working hard after Platinum Stars off-loaded him and I won't be surprised to see him back in Bafana Bafana."

Mabizela, who started his soccer career at Maritzburg City, could not be reached for comment yesterday.
