Van Blerk storms to victory

AS EXPECTED, multiple national champion Irvette van Blerk won the Spar Women's 10km Challenge in Johannesburg yesterday morning.

The respected Nedbank Athletics Club runner went home with a cheque of R60,000 for her achievement after winning the challenge in a time of 34 minutes and 22 seconds.

Van Blerk's teammate Rutendo Nyahora from Zimbabwe came second in 35:20, while Gauteng Striders runner Lebohang Phalula finished third in 35:38.

Fourth was Mapaseka Makhanya, who is expected to take part in the Diepkloof half-marathon in Soweto on October 30. Makhanya will compete in the 10km of the Soweto event.

Capetonian Zintle Xiniwe, who was among the pre-race favourites, came sixth in 36:35.

The juniors' section was won by Athlohang Primary in 37:54, with Happiness Mkhize from Tuks second in 37:59.
