FORMER Free State Stars midfielder Pitso Mokoena has been named coach of the South African Schools Football Association's Under-17 national side.

Mokoena was confirmed national coach at the end of the Metropolitan Sasfa Under-16 championships in Mamelodi at the weekend.

The announcement was made after Rosina Sedibane High of Gauteng beat Free State's Harmony School 1-0 in the final.

Deadly striker Zakhele Mgobhozi scored the goal in the 14th minute.

Mgobhozi scored nine goals since the tournament started on Tuesday and deservedly won the top goal-scorer's award.

Harmony's Motete Khampempe got the goalkeeper of the tournament award and Tshepo Ntlaba of Gauteng received the player of the tournament accolade.

Sedibane are named after the legendary athlete-turned-teacher Rosina Sedibane, who is now teaching in Tshwane.

Sasfa president Mandla "Shoes" Mazibuko said: "It was good to see some of the development coaches of the Premiership and National First Division clubs attending the games in search of new talent. We hope they were impressed."

Metropolitan brand executive Belinda Faulkner said: "We are now looking forward to the Metropolitan Cosafa Under-20 Cup in Botswana in December and the preparations are going very well."

Meanwhile, Mokoena will coach a 30-member squad that has been selected to represent the federation at the Safa Under-17 inter-regional tournament in December.
