Public invited to show Springboks Spirit

'We call upon all South Africans to join us in numbers in Sandton tomorrow at 4.30pm as we bid the Bokke well' - Message from the Sports Ministry

A farewell will be held for the Springbok rugby team in Sandton, Johannesburg, on Thursday, the Sport Ministry says.

“We call upon all South Africans to join us in numbers in Sandton tomorrow at 4.30pm as we bid the Bokke well,” it said in a statement on Wednesday.

“Our blood as we move across the streets of Sandton tomorrow will be clearly and simply green and gold.”

The team leaves for New Zealand on Thursday evening to defend their Rugby World Cup title.

“Our quest has always been to give a maximum deserving support to amabhokobhoko as they conquer the world and represent our flag and anthem in the international stage.”

Last month, Sport Minister Fikile Mbalula launched “Bok Friday”,  which called on South Africans to wear a Springbok rugby jersey every Friday in support of the team.

“Wear that jersey every Friday and we want to express to [team captain] John Smith that they have the unwavering, unshaken support, and that they must play and make us proud,” he said.
