Motsepe's big dream

Downs players pocket loot

NEW Mamelodi Sundowns trainer Johan Neeskens doesn't only want Downs to win matches, but also play world-class football that will appeal to supporters.

The 59-year-old Dutchman said he wanted commitment.

"I want everybody, including a tea lady, to be committed," Neeskens said.

"Sundowns are a big club known for winning and they deserve to win trophies. I'm here to help them win something. They are also known for their entertaining 'Piano and Shoeshine' style of play and we need to maintain the style that supporters enjoy."

Neeskens was speaking at the club's awards ceremony in Midrand on Saturday night.

He also expressed delight at players' attitude after spending 10 days assessing them at training.

Neeskens was introduced by club president Patrice Motsepe to the supporters and guests at the function.

Motsepe also unveiled another Dutchman, Jan Derks, and Harold "Jazzy Queen" Legodi as assistants to Neeskens' with another, a South African, still to be added.

New signings Punch Masenamela and Musa Nyatama were also introduced.

National Under-23 captain Doctor Mampuru and Ugandan goalkeeper Dennis Onyango have also joined the under-performing Premiership tycoons.

  • Motsepe (who wowed the crowd with his dancing skills when he was brought to the stage by Durban musical outfit Big Nuz featuring L'vovo Derango) also used the platform to outline his ambitious plans for the club's development.

"We are going to establish development structures throughout the country," he said. "We will start in Pretoria where centres will be established in Mamelodi, Atteridgeville, Mabopane and Soshanguve before spreading to other provinces."

Downs billionaire boss added that they will bring in coaches who have coached at the highest level to the structures.

  • Meanwhile, Bafana Bafana and Sundowns short-stopper Wayne Sandilands was the big winner on the night when he scooped the player of the season award and R175,000.
