Pirates' hopes 'in safe hands'

ORLANDO Pirates' third-choice goalkeeper, Jacob "Magnet" Mokhasi, has assured The Ghost that he will be equal to the task of helping Bucs complete a rare treble this season.

The well-travelled Mokhasi has been given the task of manning the poles for Pirates after second-choice keeper Senzo Meyiwa was sent off in the Nedbank Cup match against Free State Stars on Monday. First-choice keeper Moeneeb Joseph is injured.

Mokhasi, who made several brilliant saves against Stars, said he was looking forward to winning his second Absa Premiership champions medal to go with the one he won at SuperSport United last season.

He was signed by Bucs in January after the injury to Josephs, who is only expected back in action next season.

Ironically, the lanky Mokhasi will play his first full league match for Pirates against Matsatsantsa at Orlando Stadium on Saturday (8.15pm).

"I have been playing professional soccer for almost a decade and my job is to stop the opposition from scoring and that's exactly what I will be doing," Mokhasi said yesterday.

"We are well aware that Pirates are now the target of all the teams in the league, but we will continue working hard to achieve our goal of winning a treble.

"Naturally, it will be a mountain to climb because the standard of soccer in the league has reached an exciting stage where it is difficult to make predictions.

"We will take each game as it comes to avoid losing focus, especially considering that we are chasing the league and Nedbank Cup."

The former South African Under-20 and Under-23 international has also played for Bidvest Wits and National First Division side African Warriors.

He has also played for Amabinneplaas.
