Qualification 'a slam dunk' for SA teams

BASKETBALL South Africa is confident that the boys and girls Under-16 teams will qualify for the African Youth Championships later in the year.

This is the opinion of BSA national administrator Tsepo Nyewe, after the two teams started their Federation of International Basketball Associations (Fiba) Africa tournament on a positive note in Lusaka, Zambia.

The tournament started last Saturday and the finals will be played this Saturday.

The South African girls defeated one of the pre-tournament favourites, Mozambique, 71-65 in their opening match.

The boys thrashed Zimbabwe 84-79 before they walloped Botswana 124-29 in their second match.

Nyewe said based on the teams' performances in the opening matches he is confident they will make it to the finals and qualify for the African Youth Championships.

"The commitment and skills displayed in the opening matches are a clear indication that they want to qualify for the continental competition.

"Both teams' players have good height, speed and talent which only need to be nurtured by the federation," said Nyewe yesterday.

"After defeating Mozambique, the girls have an opportunity to beat their four remaining opponents. The boys need to defeat Mozambique or Angola in order to reach the final."

The boys were scheduled to play against Zambia last night and their other matches will be against Mozambique, Angola and Malawi.

The girls' remaining matches will be against Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Malawi.
