Swallows venture into Warriors' den

IF HE had his pick right now, Moroka Swallows coach Gordon Igesund would not have chosen to play Ajax Cape Town, whom they face at Cape Town Stadium tonight (8.45pm).

The timing of the encounter is poor for Swallows, coming a week after their severe pounding by AmaZulu, in which four goals were scored against them without a reply.

Even more worrying for Igesund is that Ajax are beginning to look like genuine title contenders.

While Swallows were being embarrassed by Usuthu at home last week, the Urban Warriors strolled past Platinum Stars with a 3-0 win in Rustenburg.

Igesund has, however, put on a brave face and insists that they can get a positive result in the Mother City.

With most Gauteng teams finding the going difficult in Cape Town, he pointed to their goalless draw against Vasco da Gama in December, where they played most of the match with two men down.

But Ajax are not Vasco. And this is not a dig at Vasco, who have been very impressive in their first season in the PSL. Ajax, who are third on the log, have great ambitions, one of which is being the league champions while on the other hand Swallows are trying to beat the drop.

This sets up what could turn out to be a thrilling encounter.

The people of Cape Town deserve as much after the last match at the same venue involving Ajax and Kaizer Chiefs kept them entertained.

In the first match at the same venue, Vasco da Gama will take on Lamontville Golden Arrows. The match will start at 6pm.
