PSL bans dagga

Security guards with binoculars will be deployed inside the stadium for the Soweto derby

PSL and Stadium Management South Africa have warned the more than 80,000 people expected to invade Soccer City on Saturday that the smoking of dagga will not be tolerated.

The league and SMSA have declared war on dagga and cigarette smokers after complaints from many supporters who are unwilling to bring their families to the matches because of secondhand smoke.

A total of 1,650 private security personnel will be deployed inside Soccer City to ensure that the Telkom Knockout final will be a resounding success.

Private security guards will complement police officers for this derby featuring Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.

SMSA's CEO Jacques Grobbelaar said: "Security guards with binoculars will be deployed inside the stadium to mingle with the fans. We also want to plead with smokers not to bring along cigarettes and dagga. Our facilities must be a safe and secure environment for our supporters, including the young ones.

"The security and law enforcement agencies will punish people who misbehave. Stadiums are public areas, smoking is banned.

"We are impressed by the feedback we got from the public in terms of the quick buying of tickets.

"Right now are we still selling the hospitality suites tickets. They are selling like hot cakes, which bodes well for the success of the derby."

Soccer fanatics who want to buy suite tickets are advised to go to Shoprite, Checkers and Computicket outlets throughout South Africa.

Non-catering suite tickets cost between R230 and limited catering ones at R750. PSL chief operations officer Ronnie Schloss said surveillance cameras will also be used to monitor the crowd.

Meanwhile, Metrorail have come on board to contribute to the success of the final. The company will make trains available free of charge to fans with valid tickets to watch the final. Metrorail trains will operate from areas like Daveyton, Mabopane, Eersterus, Oakmoor, Germiston, Brakpan, Vereeniging, Lenasia, Soweto and Tembisa.
