Life in jail for raping girl (10)

THE Thabamoopo Sexual Offences Court in Lebowakgomo near Polokwane has sentenced a 39-year-old man to life imprisonment for raping a 10-year-old girl.

Khomotso Nonyana of Driekop in the Greater Tubatse municipal area was sentenced to life imprisonment on Tuesday.

Lieutenant Colonel Mohale Ramatseba said this was a sequel to an incident that took place in 2007.

"Nonyana kidnapped the girl who was on her way from the shops," he said. "He drove to the bushes outside Driekop and raped her. The parents of the girl searched frantically for her but could not find her."

Ramatseba said Nonyana was spotted by a passer-by who informed police. After intensive police investigations Nonyana was arrested and charged with rape. He was subsequently found guilty and sentenced to life in prison.

The sentence was welcomed by provincial ANC Women's League chairperson Maite Marutha, who appealed to the courts for stiff sentences for perpetrators of violence and abuse against women and children.

Marutha said if she could have her way she would banish women and children abusers from society.

Meanwhile, police in Limpopo are offering a reward of R50000 to anyone who will lead them to the person responsible for the death of Matome Godfrey Mokgohloa of Moletji Mashobohleng, outside Seshego.

Mokgohloa, 23, was allegedly shot and killed by unknown people on Tuesday during a highjack.

The victim was attacked while driving a Toyota Corolla that was found a few kilometres from the scene of his murder.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Warrant Officer Masetla Manabile of the organised crime unit in Polokwane on 082 565 8015.
