Runners get set for City to City

TWO Athletics South Africa provinces have once more formed a partnership to host the City to City Marathon on September 17.

The two provinces, Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) and Athletics Gauteng North (AGN), are at an advanced stage with the preparations for the event.

"We had a meeting of the two provinces of Athletics South Africa to start the preparations for this year's edition of the ultra marathon," said CGA president James Moloi.

"Our offices in Germiston and Tshwane have been inundated with enquiries from runners all over the country who wanted to know the status of City to City Marathon this year.

"There is no sponsorship but we are still looking forward to yet another successful road running event organised by the two provinces."

Moloi said the City to City Marathon is one of the oldest road running events in South Africa, it has been taking place between Tshwane and Johannesburg for more than 100 years.

"It is one of the big events which is used by many runners to prepare and qualify for the Two Oceans and Comrades marathons in Cape Town and Durban respectively," he said.

"While we are working hard to create a platform for 10km, 15km, 21km and 42,2km road running events, we also want to see the ultra marathon runners competing on a regular basis."

Some of the top runners who will take part include Josia Thugwane, Mamorallo Tjoka and three-time Soweto Marathon winner Sarah Mahlangu.

Moloi said this year's 50km marathon will start at Blackwood Park in Centurion at 6am and finish at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Johannesburg.

The entry fee is R70. There will also be a 10km road race and walk for those who prefer shorter distances. Runners can phone CGA office on (011) 873-2768 or (011)873-2726 to register.
