Eastern Cape talent show

THE Eastern Cape government will partner accomplished boxing promoter Mzimasi Mnguni when he presents two provincial championship fights at the Orient Theatre in East London on September 5.

Mnguni's rising stars, Luzuko Siyo and Thabo Sonjica, both from Duncan Village - former IBF bantamweight holder Mbulelo Botile's birthplace - will feature on his bill.

Siyo will top the programme when he fights Simphiwe Qhwemesha for the provincial junior lightweight title. Sonjica will be involved in his first international fight against Kenyan Richard Gere.

The main supporting feature will be for the Eastern Cape junior flyweight belt between holder Sizwe Yolo and Luzuko Phike. These three fights will be contested over 10 rounds.

While the focus will be on the two provincial title fights, eyes will be fixed firmly on Sonjica, who has already been sanctioned by Boxing SA to challenge national junior featherweight holder MacBute Sinyabi.

Sinyabi, who trains at Nick Durandt's gym in Gauteng, must first make a voluntary defence against an opponent of his choice.

"I cannot keep Sonjica idling or starving because Sinyabi must make a voluntary defence," Mnguni said.

Bongani Mfundisi will fight Luyanda Nkwankwa, Thabo Shushwana will take on Lindile Petse, Mfusi Maxhayi will face Ntobeko Duma, while Xolisani Ngongeni will trade leather with Lulama Titise in non-title undercard fights.

Mnguni has given the Eastern Cape government the thumbs up for its role in the development of boxers in the province. This is a change from the criticism it has been getting from promoters in the province for assisting Gauteng promoter Branco Milenkovic.

"We appreciate their assistance no matter how big or small because it helps us to give action to up-and-coming fighters," said the man who has moulded many greats from the region.

Most of those fighters have left Mnguni's famous Eyethu Gym in Mdantsane for greener pastures.

The list of credible fighters who were groomed by Mnguni includes Zolani "Last Born" Tete, who will challenge IBF flyweight holder Moruti "Baby Face" Mthalane at Carnival City, Brakpan, on September 1.

Action will start at 2pm and all fights will be televised live on SuperSport.
