BRUSSELS - World number 12 Yanina Wickmayer is facing a race against time to be fit for the French Open following surgery on her left elbow.
The 20-year-old Belgian, who reached the semifinals of the US Open last year, was forced to withdraw from the WTA Madrid tournament on Friday after feeling pain in the joint.
The player's spokesman said that the injury dated back eight years to when Wickmayer was accidentally knocked over by a car.
She remained hopeful of being back in time to play in the French Open which starts in Parus on May 23. - Sapa-AFP
