The 20-year-old Belgian, who reached the semifinals of the US Open last year, was forced to withdraw from the WTA Madrid tournament on Friday after feeling pain in the joint.
The player's spokesman said that the injury dated back eight years to when Wickmayer was accidentally knocked over by a car.
