Mayor denies authorising pay

A storm is brewing in the Ehlanzeni district municipality over a signature authorising the payment of R415000 in legal fees .

Though the signature has been linked to executive mayor Khosi Mkhonto, she says she did not sign.

The fees were paid for a case against municipal manager Hugh Mbatha. A forensic report has accused Mkhonto of authorising the payment.

But the mayor's secretary, Petunia Banda, wrote in an internal memorandum on March 5 that Mkhonto signed the approval document in front of her.

In a surprise twist of events, Mkhonto referred questions to speaker Caswell Maluleke, who claimed that the forensic report was not recognised by the council because it had been obtained illegally. - Riot Hlatshwayo
