I want to welcome, with excitement, the appointment of Pieter Mulder as deputy minister of agriculture.
This strategic appointment came with opposition and disgruntlement from rightwing DA leader Helen Zille and one lone ranger in the Freedom Front Plus Youth League, leader Cornelius Jansen van Rensburg.
It's disappointing that Van Rensburg sees things differently. I think that this young man is misguided and lacks foresight and understanding of cooperative governance. He deserves what he's getting. His suspension, I mean.
In fact, I think the FF+ must just get rid of him as his childish behaviour is out of sync with the values and the spirit of the Constitution. His behaviour is not representative of the views of the Afrikaner youth.
With Mulder's appointment, we are reaffirming that "Working together we can do more" and this backward character seeks to cling to the past and oppose this progressive move. The appointment gives meaning to what we've said for decades: "South Africa belongs to all who live in it".
Jacob Zuma's cabinet is fairly representative of the country's demographics. And the least said about Zille's Western Cape cabinet, the better. It is an insult to the people of that province.
