Seasoned playwright Aubrey Sekhabi presents the exciting play Mantolo: The Tenth Step, at the State Theatre, Pretoria.
Written by Sekhabi and Sibusiso Masuku, Mantolo runs for a season from May 22 to June 21.
It premiered at the Mzansi Festival in the same venue last year and received positive response.
The play features experienced actors such as Peter Mashego, Phillip "Tipo" Thindisa, Kholofelo Kola, Mahlubi Kraai, Hope Sekgobela, Peter Mashigo, Tshallo Chokwe, Madge Ntamo and Pamela Ndlovu.
Mantolo: The Tenth Step is the true story of MK cadre Masuku's experiences.
In 1986 Masuku, was arrested and charged with terrorism and murder. He was sentenced to hang.
His chilling story is told in a very interesting way.
In the story he takes you on a journey of his struggles. The story brings bad memories and hatred for things that happened to many black people.
When the time came to face the guillotine his first appeal succeeded and the execution was stayed for the first time. While waiting on death row he met Almond Nofomela, a former hit squad member. Their conversations led to revelations about Vlakplaas and the death of many freedom fighters.
Through the story Masuku shows how unforgiving the apartheid regime was. He was unfortunate that he was again given notice of execution only 10 minutes before the sentence was to be carried out. To find out how he survived the axe up to now, see this show.
