Matsenene is claiming in a trial within a trial that he was tortured into confessing to being an accomplice in the killing of Avhatakali Netshisaulu, the son of former City Press editor-in-chief Mathatha Tsedu.

Two policemen testified in the Johannesburg high court yesterday that Matsenene was perfectly well at all times while detained in police cells.

They said they attended to Matsenene at the Muldersdrift police station.

Inspector Leonard Shingangi said when he attended to him, Matsenene was offered food such as fish, pap and juice.

"He had no visible injuries and never complained," Shingangi. said.

"I don't know anything about his being deprived of sleep."

In 2006 Matsenene and co-accused Mulalo Sivhidzho allegedly hired Arnold Sello to kill Netshisaulu, the latter's husband.

Netshisaulu was hijacked, assaulted and locked in the boot of his car before it was set alight.
