Disabled people 'are illiterate and poor'

The Department of Education has come under fire over its lack of commitment to improving the quality of life and status of disabled children, youth and people.

The Department of Education has come under fire over its lack of commitment to improving the quality of life and status of disabled children, youth and people.

On Friday the parliamentary joint monitoring committee quizzed the department's officials about the fact that its policies made access to education difficult for disabled people.

ANC MP Andrew Madella said 80percent of SA's two million disabled people were "illiterate and poor".

Deputy director-general for education and training Palesa Tyobeka told Parliament that R50million had been spent on improving schools for disabled kids.

But members of the committee, many of whom are disabled, said they could not see signs of any improvement. - Anna Majavu
