Open negotiations

Quick-fix solutions will not help resolve the taxi dispute that has turned violent between warring factions in Gauteng.

Quick-fix solutions will not help resolve the taxi dispute that has turned violent between warring factions in Gauteng.

The threat by the Gauteng government to shut down the affected taxi ranks will instead adversely affect commuters and law-abiding taxi operators.

The province has threatened to close down the taxi ranks in Bree Street, Johannesburg; and Clearwater and Makro in Roodepoort on the West Rand.

The province must continue negotiations with the relevant parties while the police monitor the situation and search for the culprits involved in attacks.

By closing the ranks the province would be viewed as displaying a defeatist attitude towards a problem that can be amicably resolved.
