News that Essop Pahad, the minister in the Presidency, wants the government to stop advertising in that media it considers to be critical of itself comes as no surprise.

This is something the media have to contend with regularly from companies that wish to keep the public ignorant of the potential harm their products might cause.

Thankfully, the media in our country put a high premium on their integrity and have chosen to rather lose advertising revenue from such companies than censor themselves.

Correspondingly, it would be a great pity if the government were to heed Pahad's unwise counsel and try to force the media to myopically see things its way in such an unseemly manner.
