ANC deputy president Jacob Zuma on Sunday said churches should remember former president Nelson Mandela's call for an "RDP of the soul".
Speaking at an Easter service of the Tyrannus Apostolic Church in Qwa-Qwa, Free State, Zuma called on churches to "play a meaningful role in the cleansing of the African souls contaminated by years of oppression and teachings of the missionaries".
He called on the African indigenous churches to help in restoring morals eroded by decades of apartheid and colonial rule.
"Before the missionaries came to Africa we did not have old age homes," Zuma told the assembly.
"We never neglected our elderly - fountains from which we drew wisdom.
"We never had street kids. People, not streets, gave birth to kids," he said.
