Oh! Absa, but this prize is a shame

Political shake-ups, PSL Man of the Match prize adjudication and Siphiwe Nyanda >>

NEWS of the Gauteng provincial cabinet shake-up, which saw two MECs losing their jobs and others redeployed, travelled so fast that it became a heated subject of discussion on Rea Vaya buses, minibus taxis, trains and other modes of public transport on Tuesday afternoon.

Bars and pubs were abuzz with debates on how Ain't Seen Nothing Yet's top brass in the province had allegedly imposed its own people on Nomvula "Mama Action" Mokonyane, and how the poor premier was rapidly losing her grip on power.

By nightfall everybody in Gauteng knew about the dramatic shake-up that almost ended in tears for lame duck Mama Action. That is, everybody except officials and communications managers of the Gauteng provincial government, under whose noses the reshuffle unfolded.

They were presumably all sleeping on the job because they seemed to have no inkling of what transpired on that fateful Tuesday.

Otherwise, how does it come about that the community safety's website still refers to Khabisi Mosunkutu, a veteran Ain't Seen Nothing Yet politician, as the department's MEC long after he was fired?

Axed Nelisiwe Moerane will also not be too chuffed to know she still appears on the sports, arts, culture and recreation department's website as MEC, when she has already cut all ties with the provincial government.

You will remember that when Mama Action took over as premier 18 months ago, she declared: "Kuya sheshwa la," meaning in isiZulu: "We're on top of the action here."

She might as well have been talking to trees because her officials and communications managers were obviously not listening.

Insulting prize

The Premier Soccer League and its sponsor, Absa Bank, must rethink their Man of the Match prize - awarded to an outstanding player during a televised game - if they don't want to be embarrassed on national TV one of these days.

Guluva noticed the embarrassment written all over Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune's face when he was being handed the prize by SuperSport presenter Robert Marawa after his team's game against SuperSport United at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville, Pretoria, on Sunday.

Guluva does not know about other soccer players, but for a multi-award-winning player like Khune, who earns a fortune from his rich club as well as the national team, a R1000 prize is not only a pittance, but also an insult.

The agile goal minder, who drives sleek and expensive cars and lives on an opulent golf estate, also rakes in tons of cash from commercial endorsements that make a R1000 Man of the Match prize that the league and Absa have to offer pale into insignificance.

Even Guluva - who can really do with R1000 - was embarrassed when such an outstanding and successful player was presented with such a paltry prize.

Second retirement

Axed communications minister Siphiwe Nyanda, who was Chief of Staff of the South African National Defence Force in his previous life, preferred to be referred to as General Siphiwe Nyanda (Retired) when and after he took over the department about 18 months ago.

What are we going to call the beleaguered general, Guluva wonders, now that he has been forced into a second retirement?

General Siphiwe Nyanda (Retired, Retired) perhaps?
