More misery

IT NEVER rains but it pours for the Congress of the People. Not only is the party wrecked by battles between its leaders, it has now been revealed it used public funds to pay its debt.

A forensic report by KPMG, given to Cope yesterday, has revealed that the party has illegally spent more than R5 million of its parliamentary stipend.

Each party represented in Parliament receives a stipend to run its parliamentary affairs. But according to the report, Cope leader Mosiuoa Lekota and his deputy Mbhazima Shilowa oversaw the spending of these funds to pay even debts incurred before the 2009 election.

Taxpayers have now had enough of the cavalier manner in which those in positions of power continue to misuse their hard-earned money.

Parliament must show that the public can rely on it toprotect their rights and hold politicians accountable.
