New Zealand suspected vandal identified by spit test

A New Zealand man who spat on an Australian air force plane as he vandalised it nearly four years ago was arrested after being traced through his DNA, police said.

The DNA was extracted from the saliva found on the Globemaster transport aircraft at the New Zealand Air Force base in Auckland after the incident in September 2008.

It was stored on a crime databank and proved identical to that taken from a 35-year-old man arrested after a domestic incident on Christmas Day, Detective Sergeant Steve Salton, of Waitakere, near Auckland, said in a statement.

He said it also matched DNA found at the scene of a burglary in November 2008.

The man will appear in court on charges which could put him behind bars for 10 years.
