Factory worker helps rescue trapped passenger in minibus crash

A factory worker in Johannesburg was a hero on Friday as he jumped into action to help after a woman was badly hurt when the minibus she was travelling in crashed — apparently after the driver swerved and lost control of the vehicle.

ER24 paramedics were called to the scene of the crash this morning. Russel Meiring‚ spokesman‚ said the woman was in a critical condition while 14 other passengers sustained minor to moderate injuries.

The taxi drove through a wall and crashed into a tree‚ at the Commando and Main Reef Road intersection in Industria‚ south of Johannesburg‚ he said.

“Several passengers had already climbed out of the vehicle and were now walking around on the scene. Upon closer inspection‚ paramedics found a woman lying trapped in the front seat of the taxi‚ in a critical condition.

“Using specialized rescue equipment‚ fire services began to free the woman from the vehicle.

“A worker from a nearby factory utilized his forklift to stabilize the taxi‚ which had come to rest a light incline.

“Once freed‚ paramedics treated the woman and provided her with numerous advanced life support interventions. The patient was later transported to a nearby private hospital for further treatment.”

The 14 other patients were treated and transported to Helen Joseph Hospital for further treatment.

“It is understood that the driver of the taxi lost control of his vehicle‚ as he swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle. Local authorities were on the scene to investigate further‚” Meiring said.
