Pupils loot shops and hawker stands in Johannesburg CBD

A group of around 5‚000 school pupils on Wednesday wreaked havoc in the Johannesburg CBD as they staged a protest against the Department of Education.

The group of learners are believed to have arrived in trains from Ekurhuleni‚ said Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson‚ Edna Mamonyane.

“Some businesses were forced to close shop after some of the children went inside and took things. The children were also looting stuff from hawkers‚ some of whom fought back‚” Mamonyane said.

At around 3pm‚ metro police officers managed to escort about 1‚000 of the children back to the Park Station where they boarded trains back home.

This was after they were informed that their march was illegal.

“Around 4‚000 others‚ however‚ remained behind. We have no idea what their march was about‚” Mamonyane added.

No arrests were made.

Speaking to TimesLIVE at around 6pm‚ Mamonyane said she believed the rest of the group had dispersed.
