Controversial "prophet" Paseka "Mboro" Motsoeneng said yesterday that for the next seven weeks his Incredible Happenings Ministries church will embark on prayers for rain.

Motsoeneng was speaking at his church in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni, yesterday during a service dedicated to praying for rain.

The service was attended by Minister of Water and Sanitation Nomvula Mokonyane and Ekurhuleni mayor Mzwandile Masina, among other VIPs.

Motsoeneng said the lack of rain was a "national crisis" and that rain would fall because "government is calling on God".

"The rain is going to fall and it's not about Motsoeneng. It's going to rain not because prophet Mboro is better than other people.

"I was going to be better if I was God, but I also call on God.

"For the next seven weeks we will be praying for rain and at the end of the seven weeks, there will be no shortage of rain because Jesus said ask and you shall receive. At the end of the seven weeks we will see change if we believe. I'm not the one who is going to bring rain; it's God," said Motsoeneng.

According to the Department of Water and Sanitation, the country is experiencing its worst drought since 1983 and the national average dam level was sitting at 34.0%.

The department further said that the Free State, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West provinces were the worst affected. Speaking at the church service yesterday, Mokonyane thanked Motsoeneng for being the first church leader to invite government to pray for rain.

"Many of us live under the illusion that through our hands we can create and yet in terms of drought we realise how utterly dependent we are on the Almighty to meet our basic needs for life including water.

"Today we came here to ask for your prayers so that God can help us to get a drop [of rain]. God must hear our prayers and let it rain but we know that it will happen only if we believe and have hope," said Mokonyane, quoting numerous scriptures about faith and hope. She urged the congregants to save water and called on municipalities to fix burst pipes.
