Date My Family contestant Tshepo Mokwele has angered Xhosa speakers with a comment he made during the popular Mzansi Magic show.
Mokwele was featured on Sunday's episode as an eligible bachelor, but wreaked havoc when he asked if a suitor, Linda Matsolo, was a "typical Xhosa woman".
This sparked a social media frenzy with commentators saying he was perpetuating stereotypes.
When Mokwele was asked by former Big Brother contestant Lexi van Niekerk what he meant, Mokwele responded with a laugh: "You all know how it goes with Xhosa women."
On Sunday's show, Mokwele picked another hopeful.
Mokwele said Matsolo was a bit too big for him, but then later contacted her for a date. She confirmed they had been out a few times.
Matsolo said she was offended by Mokwele's comment.
"These stereotypes about Xhosa girls must stop. I did not understand how he was judging me based on an assumption while he never even met me before."
Glodine Makapela, a hip-hop singer from Eastern Cape, was among those who took offence.
Makapela noted on Twitter: "It was really out of order. It was not stereotype, but hatred. Xhosas are being hated everywhere you go in Joburg (sic)."
Sanzio Maasdorp remarked: "That guy and generalising about Xhosa women what da f***?"
Akhona Mfaba weighed in: "Typical Xhosa Women, I'm exhausted already."
Senzeni Ndebele said: "I heard his stupid comment. 'He can go jump in a lake'. It's 2016. No tribalism."
Attempts to get comment from Mzansi Magic drew a blank.
