Forces to tackle ‘disaster’ in Simon’s Town

Sleepy Simon’s Town will be woken at crack of dawn on Saturday‚ when a simulated disaster is tackled by police‚ the military‚ emergency services and other agencies.

The multi-disciplinary simulation exercise‚ under the Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure‚ operates at national‚ provincial and local level‚ and includes several departments‚ Joints said in a statement on Friday.

Equipment and personnel will trundle into town at 4am — and also take to the sea and air.

Roads will be closed: St Georges Road (5:30am to 9am) and intermittently along the road between Dido Valley Road and Runciman Drive (10am to noon)

“We are advising the community of Simon’s Town‚ and surrounding areas‚ of this simulation exercise in advance so that they are not alarmed by the increased movement of security forces‚ police and emergency services over the next few days as planning processes are underway‚” said police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk.

Similar exercises will be held in the other provinces.
