Heavy rains and possible flooding have been forecast for parts of the Western Cape on Wednesday.

The South African Weather Service said there could be flooding in parts of the Overberg District‚ the Cape Metropole and southern parts of the Cape Winelands.

With the country caught in the grip of a drought that has seen the introduction of strict water restrictions‚ there will be welcome scattered showers in some provinces‚ including Mpumalanga‚ Limpopo‚ the Free State‚ Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

The weather service warned that severe thunderstorms are possible over the central parts of both Free State and North-West Province.

Early risers welcomed the rain‚ with Sharon Atkins ?tweeting: “Nothing like the smell of sweet rain. Much needed in Cape Town.”
