The Springs Council Chamber will on Friday be the venue for the Sector Parliament for Commercial Sex Workers.

This is an initiative of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature “aimed at creating a platform for meaningful engagement between public representatives and commercial sex workers”.

“It seeks to destigmatise‚ encourage engagements and recognise the work done to improve the understanding of the sex work environment‚” a statement from the legislature said.

It also allows for “the sharing of much-needed knowledge about current challenges facing commercial sex workers”‚ including HIV prevention and empowerment opportunities concerning commercial sex workers’ rights‚ access to health and well-being.

On the agenda are:

- A review of government’s stance on the involvement of commercial sex workers during policy review;

- Plans to curb the influx of underage sex workers in the industry; and

- Access to the justice system‚ the battle for survival in the face of human trafficking‚ abusive clients and police heavy-handedness.
