Drive to revive police reservist programme gathers speed

Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police is backing a new campaign by the South African Police Service (Saps) to invite South African citizens to serve as reservists in the force‚ saying the initiative could help fight crime.

Committee chair Francois Beukman‚ said that since 2015 the committee had emphasised a need for the reservists programme to be renewed and re-energised. He said that the initiative was right way to go in responding to calls by the committee and many South Africans.

Advertisements were published in weekend newspapers by Saps calling for more police reservists. “We want to call on members of the community to apply for the positions so that they can make a positive contribution in the fight against crime‚” said Beukman.

He said that applicants had to be of sound character. “The Committee also supports the vetting requirements for aspirant members to ensure that bad elements do not become involved in the reservist fraternity‚” he said.

The involvement of community members in their own geographic areas could have a major impact on the fight against crime. Reservists as a force-multiplier could ensure that visible policing and community policing receive more attention‚ he said.
