The #FeeSMustFall movement is a cause that all South Africans should support.

This is according to Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) vice chairperson Terry Tselane whose child is one of the protesters at the University of Witwatersrand.

"I've got a child at Wits University, I'm a parent. My son is doing fourth year LLB and then he is one of the students who are obviously affected and he's in the leadership of the student movement," said Tselane.

"The cause they are fighting for is a noble cause that should be supported by everybody, by every South African. I was supporting this cause irrespective of whether I've got a child or not at Wits University."

Wits closes until Monday to allow ‘negotiated settlement’ after violent clashes on campus

Speaking on Radio 702, Tselane, who is also the former president of the Wits Black Students Society, said that a solution to the problems raised by the students must be found.

"If you come to think of it, if we do not manage to save the academic year, these are the consequences: 1 is that there is not going to be any output for the economy of our country, secondly that there is also not going to be any input from our matriculants into the system and that has got dire consequences for our country and our democracy.

"And therefore it is important for all of us to make sure that we save the academic year but also try to find solutions in the long term for the problems that the students have been raising," said Tselane.

Wits management has decided to close the campus until Monday following violent clashes between the students and the police.

Meanwhile, student opposition the closure of the campus and the violent protests are expected to submit a memorandum of demands to the varsity management on Wednesday.

The 'Take Back Wits' group will march to demand that academic activities resume without the disturbances witnessed on Tuesday‚ while the 'Fees Must Fall' movement is adamant that there should be no classes until higher education is free for all.
