EFF suspends MP for defying its pay cut

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has suspended its Mpumalanga secretary for failing to pay a portion of his salary to the party's coffers.

According to a letter from the party headquarters in Johannesburg, dated August 29, Alfred Skhosana was suspended by the party on August 29 for defying the party on salary cuts.

Julius Malema's party expected newly elected councillors to pay 50% of their salaries for the first few months to help service its election debt.

Skhosana is an MPL in the Mpumalanga legislature and, like EFF MPs, is expected to pay 15% of salary to the party.

The letter says Skhosana is to appear before the national disciplinary committee of the party on September 12.

"You on or about 15 June 2016 have directly, indirectly and tacitly defied an instruction from the organisation that you pay the party levy, which could amount to contravention of your membership declaration as opined in section 4(2) of the EFF constitution," the letter reads.

EFF spokesman Fana Mokoena said the party was self-funding.

"We have always said that we are self-funding and get money from Parliament which all parties get. And we have always and repeated that we are not funded by anyone in London," said Mokoena.

Skhosana could not be reached for comment.
