WATCH: Two men have been arrested over assault on petrol attendant

Two Limpopo men have been arrested on charges of assaulting a petrol attendant in what is believed to be a racially motivated attack in Tzaneen at the weekend.

The men‚ Danie Le Roux‚ 26‚ and Hermanus van Dyk‚ 36‚ appeared in the Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday facing charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. They were released on R1‚000 and R500 bail respectively.

Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Moatshi Ngoepe said today the incident took place on Saturday night.

“These people arrived at the [Sasol] petrol station wanting petrol. An argument ensued between them and the petrol attendant.

“They started attacking the petrol attendant‚” Moatshi said.

The incident‚ captured on CCTV footage‚ shows one man getting out of a red car and the petrol attendant approaching the car and opening the petrol tank as if to fill petrol.

The man then moves towards the petrol attendant and is seen assaulting him.

 The attendant moves away.

Two more men emerge from the vehicle and they go to the attendant. One assaults the worker.

The attendant goes into the garage and the men follow and continue to assault him.

Of the three men‚ one is seen to be preventing the other two from attacking the attendant.

Moatshi said the reason for the attack will be placed before court when the men appear.

“This is a direct case. The evidence is there‚” he said.
