"Our stories are only on the first page if they are scandals" – Bathabile Dlamini

The ANCWL is determined to fight for women’s rights and ensure that their contributions to society are acknowledged.

ANCWL president Bathabile Dlamini addressed the issue of women not being elected to senior positions and the constant battle to prove themselves, during a press briefing earlier today.

“It always happens in all the spheres of life. Even within the media you have to fight, if you want a woman in a senior position. We have to fight for a story of a woman leading women on the first page. Our stories are only on the first page if they are scandals, why? Just because your space is dominated by men and therefore patriarchy and the utterances that are there are about all women, they are not only about the ANC women.”

Dlamini said that it’s not only women that are in politics that are oppressed it’s ‘all women that are oppressed.’

She went on to say that a lot of spheres such as law, church and media are dominated by men.

She said that is the reason why as the Woman’s League they are here to fight sexism and that is why they will fight for election of women into decision making bodies and to support them.

“So that at the end of the day they will be able to do their work” Dlamini stated.
