The safety of its baby powder and ‘shower to shower’ powder is being defended by Johnson & Johnson‚ despite a US jury ordering the company to pay $55 million to a woman who said that using the products for feminine hygiene caused her to develop ovarian cancer.

The verdict‚ which J& J plans to appeal‚ was the second straight trial loss for the company‚ which is facing about 1‚200 lawsuits accusing it of not adequately warning consumers about its talc-based products’ cancer risks‚ according to international news reports.

The South African division of the company referred queries about the product to its international statement‚ declining to provide country-specific comment including whether the lawsuit would see the company issue warnings about the use of the product on labels‚ commission further research on the cancer link that is alleged or whether‚ if any concerns have been raised locally or if any SA scientific research has been conducted.

The global statement‚ attributed to Carol Goodrich‚ spokesperson for Johnson & Johnson Consumer‚ says: “Unfortunately‚ the jury’s decision goes against 30 years of studies by medical experts around the world that continue to support the safety of cosmetic talc”.

“We understand that women and families affected by ovarian cancer are searching for answers‚ and we deeply sympathize with all who have been affected by this devastating disease with no known cause.

“Johnson & Johnson has always taken questions about the safety of our products extremely seriously. Multiple scientific and regulatory reviews have determined that talc is safe for use in cosmetic products and the labelling on Johnson’s Baby Powder is appropriate.

“We will appeal the recent verdict and continue to defend the safety of Johnson’s Baby Powder.”
