'Other SABC employees will also demand salary increase': Cope

South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) employees will follow suit and demand more money too‚ and even fewer people will paying their TV licence fees.

That’s what the Congress of the People (Cope) has predicted will happen in the wake of the controversial pay raise afforded to SABC COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

“For Motsoeneng’s salary to have increased from R2872000 to R3784000 is mindboggling‚” said the party’s Dennis Bloem.

“For him to take home a bonus of R279000 in spite of the SABC suffering a loss of R301-million in the last financial year is utterly shocking. Where would such a thing happen?”

He said that “what Motsoeneng has done will serve as a red flag to the bulls at the SABC”.

“Employees will demand big increases also citing the pay hike that the COO received. It is a singular act of provocation.

“No wonder so many people are not paying their licence fees. This will incense even more people to follow suit. The outcome will be an even bigger loss to the SABC.”

The only person Bloem said he didn’t expect a reaction from is Communications Minister Faith Muthambi.

“We don’t expect the minister to do anything about this. She might even increase his salary‚” he quipped.

Bloem said that Motsoeneng is using “his very close relationship with President (Jacob) Zuma to make himself fabulously rich”.

“If ever anyone is pompously riding the gravy train it is Hlaudi Motsoeneng.”
