Heatwave in Gauteng and North West

The South African Weather Service on Monday issued a heatwave advisory for Gauteng and the North West.

"In Gauteng it started on Saturday and is expected to end tomorrow," the service said.

The western parts of the North West, including Vryburg, Bloemhof and Klerksdorp, were expected to feel the heat until Wednesday.

The service said the heatwave was normal for summer and was caused by high pressure systems in the upper levels.

"We take the average of the hottest month and add five degrees to it. If you have that condition for three days persistently, that's when you have a heatwave."
