KZN MEC lauds arrests of 959 suspects

Kwazulu-Natal MEC for Transport‚ Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu has commended police in the province for the arrests of 959 suspects for various crimes during festive season operations.

Police said the arrests‚ made during operations conducted from November 30 to December 6‚ were for crimes such as murder‚ attempted murder‚ rape‚ business robbery‚ house robbery‚ hijacking‚ theft of motor vehicles‚ assault‚ kidnapping‚ fraud‚ stock theft‚ shop lifting‚ possession of unlicensed firearms and possession of drugs.

Police also seized a large quantity of drugs and alcohol.

Welcoming the arrests‚ Mchunu said the space for criminals was swiftly narrowing.

“These arrests are strongly welcomed and they send a clear message to criminals that they do not have a place in our society.

“We commend the police for bringing the suspects to justice with speed and swiftness and urge them to continue with their investigations so that more suspects can be arrested‚ convicted and sent to jail‚” said Mchunu.
