#ShoutYourAbortion causes a social media furore

The hashtag appeared on twitter on Friday last week but it’s been sweeping the social media streets since then.

One woman tweeted: “My abortion was in 2008. It saved my life and allowed me to escape an abusive, emotionally and physically violent man. #ShoutYourAbortion”

People have expressed their horror at what they term ‘women bragging about killing their chidren’ and others have come out in support of destigmatising abortion.

The hashtag was started by three American women, Lindy West, Amelia Bonow and Kimberly Morrison. The women started posting about their abortions after the United States House of Representatives voted to remove federal funding for Planned Parenthood.

Planned Parenthood is an American medical institution dispensing free contraceptive advice.

Many women and men have talked about their experience with abortion. Amongst these tweets are people advocating for adoption rather than abortion and others are merely greatful to have a choice.

Pope Francis recently called on priests to pardon women who have abortions during the upcoming Jubilee year - overruling hardline traditionalists within the Catholic Church.

"I have decided, notwithstanding anything to the contrary, to concede to all priests for the Jubilee Year the discretion to absolve of the sin of abortion those who have procured it and who, with contrite heart, seek forgiveness," he said.
