Presidency wants new list of IEC commissioner candidates

The process to fill a position on the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) which has been empty for almost seven months will be restarted on the orders of President Jacob Zuma.

According to a Presidency statement‚ Zuma has requested Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng “to re-initiate the process” to appoint a new commissioner as this list a panel he chaired previously “provided…did not provide sufficient choice with regards to gender and race as provided by the Constitution”.

“The list of candidates submitted to the National Assembly by the selection panel consists of eight names of which seven were African males and females and one was a white female‚” the statement said.

“Acting speaker Lechesa Tsenoli has informed the president that‚ having considered the report of the Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs‚ the National Assembly has decided not to recommend a candidate for appointment by the president…”

The position has been vacant since Raenette Taljaard tendered her resignation in February.

At the time‚ it was suggested that Taljaard resigned over the recommendation of Zuma advisor Vuma Mashinini as a replacement for IEC chairperson Pansy Tlakula‚ over a controversial botched lease deal.

Taljaard‚ however‚ denied this.
