Gauteng MEC for social development Faith Mazibuko on Wednesday expressed shock after an official in her department was dismissed after being caught selling drugs to youngsters.

“It is regrettable that an official who is expected to assist in curbing the scourge of substance abuse has undermined the very government that is at pains to help vulnerable youths who are ravaged by many social pathologies” said Mazibuko.

He commended members of Community Safety for apprehending the official – a 20-year-old man on an internship programme – who had been under police surveillance after children attending city centre schools had pointed him out during investigations.

He had allegedly been plying his trade at the precinct of the Johannesburg Library Gardens behind the department’s offices in the CBD.
